Beginnings
As I embark upon my 5 year travail in Sydney I feel it appropriate to keep you all informed of how I'm getting on each week. I've tossed around the many benefits and inadequacies of the various mediums available to me and figure that a blog that I know full well most of you will skim for the pretty pictures is my best bet. So without further adieu let me begin.
Our story begins with an epic drive from Melbourne to Sydney last Wednesday. During this journey I encountered many trials and tribulations, the first of which was the wonders of early morning traffic out of Melbourne (compounded by having to drive back through the city to rescue a folder I'd left behind). Once again I made my way along the M1, stopping for a brief breaky at a service station somewhere just past the airport. In a classic move that shall forever be ingrained in my memory I locked my keys in my car (please call me to find out how I rescued them, it is both amusing and concerning). Half an hour later after much inventive cursing I was on my way again stopping at various rest stops until I at last reached Holbrook.
Brief lunch break and necessary photo of the submarine and I was off again. Thankfully, from Holbrook to Gundagai I had no further dramas, other than the important concerns such as stopping for cd changes periodically. Reaching the mighty town of Gundagai I went exploring and found out that not only is it famous for an infamous dog that felt the need to sit dutifully on a tuckerbox, but it is also famous for historical bridges. So once again out came the camera and the tourist hat.
Bridges and dog checked off, I drove off into the distance realising that it was a mere 400km to sydney. Just over a quarter tank of petrol, on the Hume, and a foolish assumption that there would be plenty of service stations, what could possibly go wrong... Well I limped into a service station 200km later having milked my poor petrol tank for 424km when it normally gives me 350. Lesson: never, ever, ever, assume that a sign post saying petrol in 25km is telling you the truth! Crisis number 2 averted I made the last 289km stretch into Sydney without further dramas and the best part was that the pub I went to upon arrival had fish and chips and Vale Ale.
At this point you may be thinking this post is far too long and sounds deceptively like a year 6 report on what I did last summer. Well bad news, it is, and until I begin my course and do some wild and whacky things you'll just have to bear with me. Thursday and Friday were O-week. Again I made the mistake of making an assumption that all o-weeks are created equal. Wrong! It was two days of leadership exercises and team building, although we did get a pretty awesome tour of the large animal facilities (only cool for animal nerds). That being said, it was a good excuse as any to make friendly with others. For now I shall leave it there and bid you all adieu until next week when I bring you further updates from the Book of Bruce.
